The listing linked on this page is the white disc drive for PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the slim CFI-2000 group, and for the PS5 Pro. It reads 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD, and it needs an internet connection to pair. A 1TB figure on a spec widget belongs to a console, not to this drive.

The PS5 disc drive people shop for on Black Friday is Sony’s detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, not a loose part from an older console and not a USB DVD player. It exists so a PS5 Digital Edition slim, or a PS5 Pro, can play discs. It does nothing for a launch-model PS5 that already has a drive built in, and it does not turn every white console into a disc console. The model group on the bottom of your PlayStation is the fact that decides the purchase.

Sony’s product page for the drive says it is for PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the slim model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, and for the PS5 Pro. The original launch hardware, the CFI-1000 group, is a different chassis. Disc versions of that launch console already have a drive. Digital versions of that launch console do not take this add-on the way a slim Digital Edition does. If your console is the larger original shape, stop and read the model sticker before you order any drive with “PS5” in the title.

What the drive does once it is paired

The drive plays PS5 game discs and supported PS4 game discs, plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD. Sony’s retail description says an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console the first time. Until that pairing finishes, the hardware is a cover and a slot, not a working player. Plan on connecting the console to the network during setup rather than assuming the drive works the moment it clicks in.

Sony’s box list for the drive is short: the disc drive, a white cover, two plastic feet for placing the console horizontally, and a manual. You reuse the console you already own. The drive does not include a DualSense, a game, or a vertical stand. Installation means powering the console off, letting it cool, removing the current cover and the short horizontal feet, seating the drive until it clicks, and fitting the new cover and the longer feet that came with the drive. Keep the pieces you removed. Sony notes that you need them if you ever run the console without the drive.

A published PlayStation notice also tells buyers that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games are planned as digital-only at retail, while discs for games released before that date keep working on a drive like this one. That notice is about future new releases. It does not stop today’s PS5 and supported PS4 discs from playing, and it does not make the drive a download code. If your reason for the drive is a shelf of discs you already own, the notice is context, not a reason the drive stops working in 2026.

Which consoles should not get this drive

Do not buy this drive for an original PS5 disc console. The drive is already inside. Do not buy it for a PS5 Pro or a slim Digital Edition until you have read the model group and confirmed it is one of the consoles Sony lists. Do not buy a used “PS5 optical drive” pulled from a broken launch console and described as the same part. The detachable drive and the drive inside a CFI-1000 are not interchangeable hobby parts.

A PS5 Slim with the disc already attached is a different product from a Digital Edition plus this add-on. Buying both the disc-edition console and a separate drive is how people pay twice. Look at the front of the console in the listing photo. A disc slot means you are not shopping for this accessory.

PS5 Disc Drive Black Friday Deals 2026: bundles and pairing

Black Friday bundles often tape the drive to a controller, a charging dock, or a digital game code. Those extras are optional. The drive is still only the drive if the title says Sony’s disc drive for the Digital Edition and PS5 Pro. Third-party “external disc drives” that plug in over USB are a different category and do not play PS5 game discs as a console drive. If the listing does not say the drive clicks into the console and pairs over the internet, assume it is not this part.

Condition matters because the cover and the feet are easy to lose. A complete new box has the white cover and both horizontal feet. A loose used drive without the cover leaves you with a hole in the console’s shell. Ask for that list before you accept a renewed price as a complete kit.

After it arrives, pair it on your own network with the console model you checked, not with a friend’s console, and follow Sony’s power-off steps rather than forcing the plastic. The drive is paired to a console in Sony’s setup flow. Read the current on-screen steps, because account pairing is part of making the slot work.

Region and account details still apply after the hardware clicks in. Game discs follow the console’s normal account and region behavior, and a movie disc follows the usual Blu-ray rules for the disc you bought. The drive does not unlock titles that were never sold as discs, and it does not copy a disc into your library as a download. If a bundle includes a digital code beside the drive, that code is a separate license with its own redemption window.

Skip listings that promise every movie format, including audio CDs, or that claim the drive upgrades a Digital Edition into a PS5 Pro. It does not change the console’s graphics or storage. It adds a disc slot to a compatible Digital Edition or Pro. The purchase is right when your sticker says CFI-2000, CFI-2100, or PS5 Pro, you want discs, and the box includes the drive, the cover, and the feet. Black Friday is just the week when those three items get buried under extra cables. A week later the same drive is the same part. The model sticker on your console is the only deadline that matters.
