PlayStation VR2 is Sony’s virtual-reality headset for the PlayStation 5. It is one cable to the console, a pair of Sense controllers, and an OLED display in the headset. It is not the original PlayStation VR, which needed an external box and a camera, and it is not a PC headset unless you are looking at the later PC adapter as a separate accessory. Black Friday listings mix all three. The product here is the PS VR2 for a PS5.
Sony’s published headset spec is an OLED panel at about 2000 by 2040 pixels per eye, with 90 Hz and 120 Hz modes and HDR. The field of view is in the 110-degree class. The lenses are Fresnel lenses, so finding the sweet spot is part of setup. Eye tracking is built in and is used by games that support it, including foveated rendering. The headset has its own vibration motor. The Sense controllers use the adaptive-trigger style familiar from the DualSense, plus finger-touch detection and their own haptics. None of that exists on the original PSVR’s Move or DualShock setup.
The cable is a single USB-C connection to the front of the PS5. There is no processor unit to hide in a media cabinet. That is the practical difference from the 2016 headset. It also means a PS VR2 does not plug into a PS4. If your console is a PS4, this is the wrong headset. The original PlayStation VR is the PS4-era product, and it has its own page in a search because the names overlap.
Comfort and space matter more than they do for a controller. The headset has a dial for the lens distance and a scope adjustment so glasses wearers can sometimes play without contacts. It is still a face-mounted display. You need a clear play area, the tracking cameras on the front of the headset need to see the controllers, and a ceiling fan at head height is a bad roommate. Sony includes earbuds in the typical box rather than an over-ear headphone. You can use your own headphones if the game audio path you choose supports them. Confirm what the listing puts in the box before you assume a premium headset is included.
Games are not all “VR” in a generic sense. A PS VR2 game is a PS5 game with VR2 support. The headset does not include a library of games by default, and a console theme is not a VR title. Read the game page for the PS VR2 label before you assume an older favorite was updated. Original PSVR games do not automatically run. Some have PS VR2 versions. Many do not. A bundle that includes Horizon Call of the Mountain, or any later bundle game, should name that game on the box. A download code and a disc are different. Codes can be region-locked to the account country. A Black Friday bundle that says “game included” without naming it is not a complete description.
Prescription inserts are a real accessory from Sony and from other makers. They are not in the standard headset box. If you cannot use the scope adjustment with your glasses, plan on inserts as a separate fit problem, not as something the Black Friday bundle silently solves. The standard box is the headset and the controllers.
The PC adapter is an official accessory that lets a PS VR2 work with a compatible computer. It is not in every headset box. If you do not own a PS5 and you are buying the headset for a PC, the adapter has to be in the cart as its own item or included by name. A standard PS VR2 box alone is a PS5 product.
PS VR2 Black Friday Deals 2026: What to Confirm Before You Buy
Confirm the headset, both controllers, and the cable, then confirm which console you actually own.
A full PS VR2 set is the headset, the left and right Sense controllers, a USB-C cable, earbuds, and the printed setup guide. Controllers are easy to lose and expensive to replace. A listing with one controller, or with “controller not included,” is not the standard set. Renewed listings should say whether both controllers are present and whether the lenses are clean. Fresnel lenses show grease and hairline scratches in a way a phone photo hides. Ask for a picture of the lenses if the listing is used.
Match the bundle text to a named game or to no game at all. A headset-only listing is a fine purchase if you already know which game you want. A bundle is only a bundle if the extra item is identified. Do not pay attention to a banner that says “VR ready” on a PS5 console. That console does not include this headset.
Black Friday also surfaces the original PlayStation VR at a lower ask. The giveaway is the external processor unit and the old camera dependency in the product photo. If you see a boxy breakout box, you are not looking at PS VR2. The same is true of generic phone VR shells and of Quest headsets. Those are other platforms. They do not play PS VR2 games.
When it arrives, update the PS5 first, then run the VR2 setup and the eye-tracking calibration. Set the lens distance so the picture is sharp in the center. Charge both Sense controllers. Start with the game that came in the bundle, or with a short experience, before you rearrange the room for a long session. If the image is soft, recast the headset on your face before you assume the panel is bad. If a controller will not track, check the tracking rings for cracks.
PS VR2 in 2026 is still the PS5 headset with OLED panels, eye tracking, headset haptics, and Sense controllers on one USB-C cable. Black Friday is a reasonable time to shop it if the box in the photo is that set. If the photo shows an older breakout box, a missing controller, or a PC adapter you did not mean to buy, keep looking. The name on the banner is not the contents of the box.
