PlayStation VR, the original headset, is the PS4-era virtual reality kit. It is not PlayStation VR2. VR2 is a PS5 headset with one USB-C cable and Sense controllers. The original PSVR uses an external processor box, a PlayStation Camera, and a more complicated cable path. Black Friday pages in 2026 still list both under “PS VR,” and the older kit is often the cheaper photo. This page is the original PlayStation VR, and the revision to prefer when you can identify it is the CUH-ZVR2, the 2017 update.

The headset has a single OLED panel, 5.7 inches, at 1920 by 1080, running at up to 120 Hz with a field of view around 100 degrees. Those are the original PSVR figures, not the per-eye resolution of PS VR2. The picture is softer than a modern headset. That is the product, not a broken unit. Games designed for it still look like PSVR games. They do not become VR2 games because the television in the background is a 4K set.

CUH-ZVR2 is the revision that added HDR passthrough to the television and simplified the cabling, with headphones integrated into the headband on that version. The earlier CUH-ZVR1 is also real PlayStation VR. It is fussier to connect and it does not pass HDR through to the TV in the same way. If you care about HDR on the television while the breakout box is in the chain, look for ZVR2 on the headset or the box. Both versions need the processor unit. If the listing photo has no small black breakout box, you may be looking at VR2 by mistake, or at a headset sold without the part that makes it work.

The camera is required for tracking. It is the old PlayStation Camera, not the HD camera that shipped with some PS5 bundles, unless you have the specific adapter path Sony documented for using original PSVR on a PS5. A PS4 owner can ignore that complication: you need the camera the headset was designed around, plus a DualShock 4, and Move controllers only if the game calls for them. A bundle should say whether Move controllers are included. Many PSVR games use the DualShock 4 only. A listing that assumes you own the camera is a different price class from a listing that includes it. Read the box contents. Do not infer them from a lifestyle photo of a person wearing the headset.

Space in the room matters as much as the processor box. The camera wants you about the distance the game asks for, standing or seated, with the Move controllers or the DualShock visible. A coffee table at shin height is the usual accident. Clear it. The headset cable is long enough to reach a seated player and short enough to yank a processor unit off a glass stand if you stand up fast. Leave slack, and do not coil the HDMI lead so tight that it fails. Original PSVR gets warm on the forehead. That is the design. Take a break when the game does not.

PS VR2 games do not run on this headset. PSVR games do not automatically run on VR2. The libraries are separate. A “VR bundle” game has to name a PSVR title if this is the headset you own. A code for a VR2 game is useless here. Cables are specific. The processor unit has labeled ports. A missing HDMI cable is a small problem. A missing processor unit is the whole product.

PS4 VR Black Friday Deals 2026: What to Confirm Before You Buy

Confirm the headset model, the processor unit, and the camera situation.

A workable original PSVR set is the headset, the processor unit, the power cable for that unit, the HDMI path, and a camera if you do not already own one. CUH-ZVR2 should be the words you see if you want the later revision. Earpieces on ZVR2 are easy to lose. Ask a used seller for a photo of the processor unit from the port side so you can see that the ports are intact. Cracked headbands are common on sets that lived in a bright window. The foam on the face gasket is a wear item. A listing that includes a fresh gasket is being specific in a useful way.

Black Friday mixes this with phone holsters, with PS VR2, and with Aim controllers sold alone. The Aim controller is a real PSVR accessory for a few games. It is not the headset. Move controllers without the headset are not the headset. A PS4 console bundle that says “VR ready” does not contain this hardware unless the title lists it.

On a PS5, stop and read Sony’s current adapter requirement before you buy an original PSVR. The headset was built for the PS4. Some people do run it on a PS5 with the right camera adapter. That adapter is its own part. If it is not in the box and you do not own a PS4, you may be buying a headset you cannot connect. That is the check that matters more than the color of the headband.

When it arrives, connect the processor unit with the TV off to the side so you can see the cables, update the PS4, and run the headset setup. If the picture in the headset is dim and the TV is black, the HDMI path is in the wrong port. The labels on the processor unit are the guide. Give the tracking camera a clear view of the player, with no bright window behind the body.

Label the processor unit’s cables with a bit of tape the first time you get a picture, so the next move of the TV stand does not become a second setup. Original PlayStation VR for a Black Friday buy is the headset plus the processor unit, ideally the CUH-ZVR2 revision, plus a plan for the camera. PS VR2 is the other headset. If the photo shows a single cable and no breakout box, you have left this product. Match the box. Then match the games to PSVR, not to VR2.
